How to Get Rid of a Boil
Boils are skin infections that are easily treated when given prompt and proper attention. In this article, you are given tips on how to get rid of a boil.
Step one: Provide boils with proper moisture and heat.
Applying warm soaks on your boil helps you relieve of pain and allows it to heal faster. Apply warm compresses for twenty to thirty minutes, three to four times daily so that you can drain the pus in no time. Once it drains, wash it with antibacterial soap or apply povidone iodine so that no bacteria can enter the open wound. This way, further infection is prevented.
Step two: Surgery.
This may scare you a little, but this is actually done in an out patient basis. The procedure is called incision and drainage, where the boil is cut and the “head” and pus are drained out of the incision. After this, gauze with antiseptic solution is applied to cover it and keep it away from bacteria.
Step three: Keep your wounds clean.
This is actually the key to preventing skin infections and also an important step on how to get rid of a boil. Staphylococcus aureus loves to thrive on your wounds and cause infection. Stop this from happening by cleaning your wounds with antiseptic solution or antibacterial soap. Also make sure to change wound dressings regularly and apply bandages when necessary.
Step four: Recurrent problems with boils must need further attention.
For one, you may have a family member who is a carrier of Staph bacteria. It is therefore advised that you have your family members evaluated by doctors. Physicians may order bacterial cultures to identify the type of bacteria causing your boils. The right type of antibiotic then can be prescribed by the doctor.
Step five: Follow your antibiotic treatment regimen religiously.
It may be irritating to always take antibiotic capsules three times daily, but that is the only way you can protect yourself from further infections secondary to boils. When you do not complete your antibiotic therapy, you end up having a stronger, more resistant Staph that may be harder to kill.
Boils are usually resolved after two weeks. If you notice that your boils do not heal or form “heads”, seek medical help at once. You must also be careful if you have systemic diseases like diabetes, or if you have a compromised immune system as in the case of cancer or AIDS patients. Those taking steroids must also be keen since they have compromised immune systems.
